As I love to brag about our world’s different and unique culture, I cannot skip the famous Peruvian Incas. Not only is the culture fascinating and has kept many historians and archeologists buy for centuries, but the historic city of Machu Picchu has brought great first-hand pick to what used to be the Incas’ capital. Here, I get some basic information from the past until these days. If you had been to Machu Picchu, I would understand the magnitude of the place. Machu Picchu is a historic sanctuary in the Peruvian Andes in South America. It comprises steep Andean slopes characterized by valleys made by Desert Rivers. Machu Picchu is a historical city of the larger Inca Empire.

Size of the Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu covers vast land. The ancient city remains are situated on 32,592 hectares in size.


The Andean/Incas occupying Machu Picchu comprise diverse populations that speak three primary languages. These are Quechua, Aymara and Spanish. These people who make up the Andean societies have a culture of farming together through communal labor.


No written history explains the existence of Machu Picchu’s ancient remains. However, Machu Picchu city is believed to have been built in AD 1430. A century later, in 1530, it became the Inca rulers’ residence during the Spanish conquest period. The Inca Empire ruled over the Andean. The empire was built around the Incas Mountain that hosted the Andean societies.

Tourists officially began visiting the Machu Picchu remains in 1980. Further, Machu Picchu city was declared a natural heritage site of cultural significance by UNESCO in 1983. Tourism to Machu Picchu city was low in 1992, attributed to terrorism. However, the sanctuary city has experienced exponential growth in the number of tourists. For instance, in 2003, there were 500 000 visitors toured the sites.


Architectural sites of beautiful landscapes and ecosystems characterize Machu Picchu. It is made up of hills and valleys. Additionally, there are temples that are still in existence on the historic site. Amazing terraces that were made around the mountain by farmers form such lovely sites to behold. Small valleys across the mountainous hills are a beautiful sight to behold.

Contemporary Machu Picchu City

Some communities live around this cultural heritage place currently. Spanish and Quechua are the languages that you will hear the local communities articulate when you tour Machu Picchu. Hiking on the Inca trail is a popular tourist activity you will undertake on the cultural heritage site.


Currently, Catholicism is the main religion that modern Andeans practice. Moreover, some ancient gods are still being worshiped, for example, Inti Raymi. Machu Picchu is a historical site envisaged by the rich culture of the Andean with visually attractive archaeological remains of the great city.
